What happened

TDB Group signed a debt facility with BURN Manufacturing at the Africa Energy Forum in Cape Town on 19 June 2025, alongside a performance-based grant to BURN from the Trade and Development Fund (TDF) under the ASCENT platform. The facility supports BURN's expansion to 429,127 households in Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Mozambique. Neither TDB nor BURN discloses an amount for the facility or the grant (trade press reports a figure for a package shared with Ignite Power, which is not the company's account). On 24 November 2025 TDF and the World Bank Group announced five further ASCENT results-based grant agreements, one with BURN, sharing US$10.8m between five grantees without giving BURN's share.

Kumo note

- Debt and a results-based grant are signed together: the lender provides the facility and the TDF grant pays on delivery of households reached, while BURN gives customers a subsidy in exchange for the future value of the carbon credits, in its CEO's words.
