What happened

GBP 1m loan from Oxbury Bank Plc to unlock Restord's first commercial-scale biochar operation in the UK - believed to be the first loan of its kind extended to a UK biochar company. Facilitated as part of the Green Finance Institute's new CDR Catalyst, with catalytic pre-purchase support from Terraset helping unlock the loan. Project partners: The Green Waste Company and Woodtek Engineering Ltd. Key contacts: Carolien Samson & Karl Carter (Oxbury Bank); Georgia Berry & Kitty Byrne (GFI); Adam Fraser (Terraset). Foundations now in place to move beyond pilot toward meaningful scale in UK biochar CDR. May 2026.

Kumo note

A GBP 1m term loan secured on the pyrolyser rather than on the carbon, believed to be the first bank loan of its kind to a UK biochar company. The security is a fixed charge over the pyrolysis equipment, created 8 May 2026, with a manufacturer buyback option from Woodtek Engineering standing behind it: if the borrower fails, the lender's recovery is a machine with a contracted buyer rather than a carbon stream with none. The borrower is Restord GWC Opco Ltd, a joint venture between Restord and its feedstock partner The Green Waste Company, incorporated three weeks before the announcement. It is one of four financings behind the same plant: Terraset's forward pre-purchase came first and is what showed the bank that demand existed at a contracted price, The Green Waste Company took equity, and a GBP 100,000 revolver sits alongside this loan. Structured through the Green Finance Institute's CDR Catalyst.
