Biogenic CO2 capture at Rauma pulp mill recovery boiler, 100,000 tCO2/yr, CO2 routed to e-fuel production

What happened

Finnish state aid of EUR 21,000,000 to Metsä Fibre Oy for biogenic CO2 capture at the Rauma pulp mill recovery boiler, 100,000 tCO2/yr, awarded under a competitive reverse auction. The captured CO2 is used in e-fuel production.

Kumo note

Reported across the trade press as BECCS. It is not. The awarding ministry states that in all three projects the captured CO2 is used in e-fuel production, so there is no geological storage, no permanence and no removal, and neither the ministry nor the recipients mention a carbon credit or a removal unit anywhere. Capture for utilisation, which is BECCU.
