Post-combustion capture of biogenic flue gas at the Mercer Peace River pulp mill, approximately 500,000 tCO2 a year, Svante solid sorbent filters

What happened

Emissions Reduction Alberta awarded C$7m from the TIER fund towards the Peace River carbon capture project at Mercer Peace River pulp mill, capturing approximately 500,000 tonnes of CO2 a year from biogenic recovery boiler flue gas. Total project value C$25.95m. Announced alongside fifteen other projects on the same day.

Kumo note

Public money into biogenic capture at a pulp mill, which is one of the few industrial sites where the CO2 coming off the stack is already biogenic and so capturing it is removal rather than avoidance. A demonstration unit is running; the commercial project has not taken FID.
