What happened
- Climeworks won a GBP 783,749.20 (US$1.04m as stated by QC Intel) tender run by the UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) to offset about 5,165 tonnes of CO2 equivalent of embodied emissions from the construction of a UK government building project (QC Intel, 28 Sep 2026; Carbon Removal Weekly week 40). DSIT's own notices on Find a Tender name it as the contracting authority and describe a one-off procurement, via a broker, of removal-based credits for a single building; the budget was up to GBP 2.5m including VAT. Carbon Pulse reports it as the UK government's first contract to buy carbon removal credits. The contract term is 1 year 5 months, and it is reported as the first announced agreement under the department's call. Delivery timing, the removal method and any storage partner are not stated in the sources read. Recorded as an offtake: no capital moved before the credits, so the deal is out of the league tables.
Kumo note
- The first UK government purchase of carbon removal credits (as reported by Carbon Pulse), won on a tender and sized against the embodied emissions of a single government building rather than an operational footprint.
