What happened
- Twelve-year agreement under which Microsoft purchases 2,850,000 soil carbon removal credits from Indigo Ag's Carbon by Indigo programme. Indigo's own release: "Under the 12-year agreement, Microsoft will purchase 2.85 million credits". It is the third Indigo and Microsoft transaction, building on 40,000 tonnes in 2024 and 60,000 tonnes in 2025, and does not absorb either. Credits are issued under the Climate Action Reserve's Soil Enrichment Protocol, project CAR1459, and are approved against the ICVCM Core Carbon Principles; a 40-year durability term was agreed with Microsoft on top of the protocol's 100-year monitoring obligation. No contract value is disclosed by either party.
Kumo note
- The largest soil carbon purchase in this dataset, on a twelve-year term, from a buyer that had previously bought 40,000 and then 60,000 tonnes from the same developer. The durability question is the interesting one: soil carbon is the least permanent pathway here, and the parties answered it contractually rather than physically, agreeing a 40-year durability term on top of the registry's own 100-year monitoring obligation. Issued on the Climate Action Reserve rather than Verra.
