What happened

Eight-year agreement for 600,000 carbon credits from regenerative agriculture across 50,000 hectares of smallholder farmland in Punjab and Haryana, structured by Earthly. Practices are direct seeded rice, reduced tillage and crop residue incorporation, aimed at cutting residue burning and building soil carbon. Delivery is about 100,000 tonnes a year between 2028 and 2033. Verra VM0042, upgrading to v2.2 for Core Carbon Principles eligibility. No contract value is disclosed.

Kumo note

An eight-year term on soil carbon, which is long for a pathway whose permanence is measured in years rather than centuries, and the buyer is a pharmaceutical company rather than one of the technology buyers that dominate this market. Earthly structured the agreement. The only money moving early is Varaha financing its own farmers, through subsidised machinery access and a share of credit revenue, rather than the buyer funding the build.
